How long does skunk road kill continue to stink?

My fiance hit a skunk tonight and feels guilty. She wants to honor it by making a rug out of it. How long should she leave it in the trunk of her car until she can bring it in our house? How long does skunk road kill continue to stink?
If you bring it directly into the house, it won't stink up your car. Why risk it by leaving it in the trunk? How long does skunk road kill continue to stink?
Taxidermists (people who make trophies out of animals/animal pelts), can usually treat the animal with preservatives and chemicals to remove bacteria and stench. However, I believe they need a properly hunted/killed animal, not road kill.

If your fiance wants to do it herself...Just talk her out of it. If you have pets, they will not leave the skunk pelt alone.
What ever car it was placed in had been permanently scared. (literally) If you have a keen nose you can smell a skunk about 25miles away with a good draft and the smell last for about 30 days in the open. I can't even imagine what that car smells like (How much more what your home will smell like)
She wants to make a rug! Blimy how big are skunks in your country? BURY IT - get rid of it - stinky poo - not worth the trouble. Come for a drive over here - your sure to hit a kangaroo on any country road and they really are big enough to make a rug....but a skunk?
You could bury it.
