I have outdoor cats and once in a while, a skunk appears outside. I want to know a safe way to drive a skunk away without getting myself, my house, or my pets sprayed.What is best way to drive skunks away without getting sprayed?

A .22 cal rifle, if you shoot them right between the shoulder blades, they will die before they can spray you.


I did this once with a .22 pistol, but I'd recommend a rifle.


I'd guess a head shot would be as effective.

The best way would be to have animal control come and trap the skunk and hall it away. Please don't try throwing water at a skunk. Skunks can shoot their spray accurately up to around 40 feet or so. If the skunk is in a confined area, the best way to handle them is to gas them to sleep first.





Another good way of keeping skunks away is to remove anything that could be a food source for them. If you have outdoor cats or dogs that you keep outdoors, the skunk could be getting into the feed bowl and eating their feed. Cat food and dog food are often used in live traps to trap animals such as skunks and raccoons.





Also be careful about shooting the skunk. If it isn't hunting season for skunk, or you don't have the right permit you could find the local game warden giving you a ton of trouble if you aren't careful. Many hunters have had their cars and guns confiscated along with being fined and thrown in jail for shooting an animal when they weren't supposed to. So you might talk to a local game warden and ask them for help before you make any attempts to solve the problem yourself.
