Does a skunk really smell as bad as it's reputation suggests?

I'm from England so we don't have them here, but someone told me if you get sprayed it can take weeks to get rid of the smell. Is this true?Does a skunk really smell as bad as it's reputation suggests?
yupp...if u get sprayed it sticks on you like super glue and is almost impossible to get off...some people say peanut buuter or tomatoes work...

And yes it smells bad but if u live here u get kinda used to it...Does a skunk really smell as bad as it's reputation suggests?
It is true, that once it is on you (or your dog...believe me, I know), it takes forever to get rid of the smell. Even with all the suggested remedies, like using tomato sauce.

Actually, I don't find the smell all that offensive. I wouldn't want to be sprayed and have it on me for any length of time, but just smelling one that's dead on the road or something isn't really that bad.
It IS pretty rancid and awful.... but the odour usually goes away after a few days after washing etc etc
yes weeks actually!
it ain't good. I don't know about weeks, but it stays around a long while. Tomato juice is used on dogs that get sprayed to get rid of the odor.
yes
it is certainly an eye opener..it's really bad when the dog gets sprayed and you have to bathe it...I figure if they say a bath in tomato juice helps, you know it is pretty rank..

I don't know what to compare it to...kinda like rotten egg beer dead fish puke..
Yes, yes and yes. They smell HORRIBLE.
Oh, yeah. It is just awful. A mixture of swamp gas, vinegar, and sweet smell. Once you have smelt it, you never forget it....
Yes, I hate the smell. I don't know anyone who smells this way. I suppose it can last for awhile.
They spray the worst smelling stuff and yes, it can takes weeks for the smell to dissipate.
The smell is like burning rubber and very strong. I've never been doused myself, but I did hit one on the road in Idaho,USA, with all my windows rolled up, and the car was filled instantly with the stench. How the stink got inside a fast moving car with the windows up, I don't know. Wouldn't know how to get the smell off...
A lot worse, got sprayed in the face if it were not for wearing glasses think it might have blinded me. A close up spray job like that smells like burnt rubber, nearly impossible to get off.
yes they smell horable .. and btw its so bad its hard to explain the smell .. but when u smell it u totally know what it is!!! ehhh gosh .. they smell sooooooooooooo BAD ...

if they run out in front of you and you hit them every motorist who passes wILL smell the smell after a skunk has been run over!! you definatlly know if someone just hit a skunk too ..

also ... lol .. i used to have a pet baby skunk when i was lil' and we had the gland removed but it still has a bad odor when they get mad .. it used to fight with my pet ferret and the bad stench would come on' ...

but for your ? the answer is .. YES IT IS TRUE
H3ll Ya.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Rock on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, but only if you're pretty close to them. My brother's feet are worse though.
i'v never met a skunk but i have kept ferrets for 11 years and they dont smell as bad as their reputation suggests.

they do stink when they spray, but they only do it out of fear, and the smell goes away in a few hours.

cats stink when they spray too...
It's not a bad odor it's a Very Strong, animal MUSK scent. It's unbearable. Not like fecal matter or rotten dead animal or rotten food.

Yes the smell can linger on for a while. There are cases of people hitting them with their cars and hit that musk pouch and the scent gets in the vents, eventually in the car and one has to get the car professionally cleaned to get rid of the odor.
'Skanks' are everywhere in England......Lmao
yes once you get a whisk of that scent -you will never forget it
Oh, sweet Lord, it does !!!! It reeks, it haunts you, it goes into your mouth, your lungs, and you don't have to be close to the skunk. That smell can carry for some distance. It is most aggravating at night, you wanna sleep by an open window and then you are assaulted by this stink, ugh...
Yes, that is true.
sure does
It is a very foul smell! My dog has been sprayed a few times, and even after several baths the smell comes back when she gets wet, she also rubbed her face on my carpet before we could stop her (when she was sprayed in the face), and we had to get the capets professionally cleaned! It is very nasty and if you never have to smell it you can consider yourself lucky!
Yes. Dogs will go totally apesh*t if squirted by them, and my grandmother and dad have both told me that the smell is so bad, it'll make you want to pass out, or vomit. The smell does last for a really long time. Not as strong but still there, and still nasty.

I've seen skunks but luckily never been sprayed by one.
yes, they are pretty bad, but i had a dead possum under my porch which was much worse in my opinion.
oh yeah thats defiantly true that when they spray you it doesn't go away for weeks, but they are nice if you remove that sack where it has that nasty gas stored but i kind of wished we didn't have them in the u.s cause they go by roads and people run over them then it smells like **** for a month
yes, it really smells that bad. i don't know about weeks, but the smell does linger for a while.
Yes. They often produce a nasty smell from their anal glands.
